Consumer Protection Regulations Take Effect

Consumer Protection Regulations for the Electronic Communications Sector (ECS) become effective on December 30, 2013, with the Utilities Regulation and Competition Authority’s (URCA) publication of the final regulations [URCA document reference ECS 19/2013]. Publication of the regulations concludes a process initiated on June 10, 2013 when URCA released draft regulations for public consultation. Consultation activities included public meetings on the draft regulations in New Providence, Abaco, Andros, Eleuthera, Grand Bahama and San Salvador; in addition to appearances by URCA representatives in various broadcast media forums. Number Portability on Schedule for December 2nd Start

Implementation of Fixed Number Portability (FNP) in The Bahamas is expected to begin on December 2, 2013 as per URCA’s October 29, 2013 Determination. FNP will allow customers switching voice services from one provider to another, to do so without having to change their telephone number. Service Providers have met testing and readiness criteria, making the start possible everywhere in The Bahamas where fixed line telephone service is offered by more than one provider.
