Today, the Utilities Regulation and Competition Authority, (URCA) published for consultation its Preliminary Determination on Fees for the Electricity Sector (ES) in The Bahamas (EC 01/2016). On January 28, 2016 the Electricity Act (EA) came into operation which established URCA as the regulator for the Electricity Sector in The Bahamas. URCA will seek to regulate the ES in accordance with the goals, policy objectives and principles set out in the National Energy Policy and the Electricity Sector Policy, as required by the EA. In accordance with sections 54(2) and 64(1)(b) of the EA, URCA now sets out in this Preliminary Determination the types of fees and charges it proposes to levy upon licensees in the ES. URCA invites and welcomes representations from licensees, members of the public and interested parties on the matters set out in this Preliminary Determination. URCA Grants Licences to NewCo 2015 Limited

In early June 2016, the Utilities Regulation and Competition Authority (URCA) received notification from the Minister that it should proceed with the licensing of a new cellular mobile network operator and service provider, NewCo2015 Limited (NewCo). CBL, as the successful applicant under the RFP process, will have a 48.25% shareholding in NewCo as well as board and management control. A special purpose holding company set up by and currently wholly owned by the Government of The Bahamas, HoldingCo2015 Limited (HoldingCo), will own the remaining 51.75% of the shares of NewCo.
