Update on Competition Investigations

The Utilities Regulation & Competition Authority (URCA) hereby advises the public of the following investigations commenced by URCA which are currently ongoing regarding allegations of anticompetitive conduct: (i) Complaint by Systems Resource Group Limited (SRG) regarding toll free calls offered to the Bahamas Telecommunications Company Limited’s (BTC) fixed line subscribers when dialing ViBe numbers. (ii) Complaint by SRG alleging a margin squeeze by BTC with respect to BTC’s interconnection/ wholesale domestic long distance termination charge and BTC’s retail ViBe offerings. URCA Board Urges Restraint and Reiterates Integrity of the Institution and Its People

The URCA Board is alarmed and disappointed at the recent attacks on the integrity of the Utilities Regulation and Competition Authority (URCA) and its CEO, Mr Usman Saadat. URCA urges all interested and well meaning members of the public to desist from unproductive and damaging behaviour or unsubstantiated public comments and instead concentrate objectively on the core issues. URCA Board Strongly Refutes Allegations of Conflict

An article appeared in The Nassau Guardian on the 23rd of February 2011, alleging that a Cable & Wireless (“C&W”) Executive is an URCA advisor. The article makes reference to URCA’s on-going role as the competition authority responsible for reviewing and adjudicating on the transaction to privatise BTC, and questions URCA’s integrity in relation to its performance of that function.
