Numbering

Numbering represents an important element of efficient telecommunications, and is rapidly becoming a key commercial and competitive factor for the telecommunications industry. URCA is required to publish a numbering plan, with the principal aims of promoting efficient use of numbering while also taking into consideration:

  • International numbering standards
  • Anticipated usage
  • Technical feasibilities with particular consideration to the geography of The Bahamas

Initially published in August 2011, the national numbering plan (NNP) is designed to facilitate URCA management of numbering resources in a manner that promotes sector efficiency while also supporting optimal use of those numbering resources. The NNP governs the administration of all numbering resources for telephone services in The Bahamas. The NNP and associated forms and documents may be downloaded via link below:

Mobile Number Portability

On 27 April 2017 the Utilities Regulation & Competition Authority launched Mobile Number Portability (MNP) in The Bahamas.  MNP allows consumers to change service providers while keeping their existing number by porting the number over to their new provider. More information on MNP can be found by viewing the consultation documents released here.
