ES 01/2021 Preliminary Determination and Draft Order on BPL Renewable Energy Plan 2020
The Government of The Bahamas intends for renewable energy to form a significant portion of the power consumed in the country. The target is 30% renewables by 2030. This renewable energy will offset that currently generated from fossil fuels. Part V of the Electricity Act, 2016 (EA) mandates public electricity suppliers (PES) to produce a renewable energy plan. The plan will set out how sustainable renewable energy technologies will be introduced into the electricity supply system in a timely manner. In compliance with this requirement, the Bahamas Power and Light (BPL), a PES, has submitted its Renewable Energy Plan, 2020 (REP). As required by the EA, particularly section 25, the Utilities Regulation and Competition Authority (URCA) has made a preliminary determination to approve the REP as set out in the attached document, ES 01/2021.
