The Utilities Regulation and Competition Authority (URCA) will once again lead the Bahamas’ observation of the International Telecommunications Union’s (ITU) International “Girls in “ICT” Day. The ITU invites its member states worldwide to celebrate the 4th Thursday of April each year as International Girls in Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Day. This ITU initiative began years ago and has been endorsed by its 170 member states. This year the Day will be observed on Thursday 26 April, under the theme ‘Expand horizons, change attitudes’ in Freeport, Grand Bahama. As member of ITU, the United Nations agency for telecommunications, The Bahamas began celebrating Girls in ICT Day in 2015 and has seen an increased interest in the ICT sector by young girls and women in general.
Girls in ICT day’s objectives are to:
a. promote the use of and access to ICT by girls and women;
b. expose young women to the myriad of opportunities in the sector; and
c. empower girls and young women with the knowledge that careers in ICT can be very beneficial
for them.
Girls in ICT Day, brings together students from high schools and colleges throughout The Bahamas for an exciting day of interactive learning.
